The first act of Jackson’s life featured maybe the most spectacular ascent in all of American popular culture, a child prodigy who topped the charts four times before turning 13 and by age 25 was arguably the most successful solo artist in the history of the world. The second act of Jackson’s life found him redefining the limits of celebrity eccentricity while still maintaining an imperial position in American life: There was his ever-shifting physical appearance, his menagerie of pet chimps and tigers and elephants, his growing penchant for reclusion at his storied Neverland Ranch, often in the company of young children. The third act, of course, was a prolonged and staggering fall from grace, as a series of sexual abuse allegations from several of those children turned Jackson into a pariah figure.…
