Nitrate water testing returns this weekend

Southland The Ensign Greenpeace is holding another round of nitrate water testing events in Gore district this week. Members of the public are are encouraged to bring multiple samples of drinking water from their taps or public supplies, with instructions to run a tap for a minute before filling up a clean container. The organisation carried out water testing in Gore last November over concerns over the nitrate level in the town supply. It said the town supply was at approximately 4.8 mg/L nitrate contamination – approaching the level associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. A "do not drink" warning was issued in the town last July after nitrate levels spiked heavily. A report by Environment Southland released earlier this year reported the spike was linked to dairying. The Gore District Council challenged Greenpeace’s testing criteria, Mayor Ben Bell saying their testing method was less accurate than the council’s.…
