The latest head of one of Japan's most acclaimed ceramicist families believes that to preserve traditional crafts, they must adapt in some ways to the present. | OHI MUSEUM Kanazawa, Ishikawa Pref. – This is a busy year for Ohi Chozaemon XI. Fresh on the heels of his induction as a member of the Japan Art Academy in 2025, the acclaimed ceramicist is now marking the 360th anniversary of his family’s legacy with a series of solo exhibitions. Following a February show in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Ohi brings his refined works to Tokyo’s Nihombashi Mitsukoshi department store from May 13 through 18. Based in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Ohi is the leading figure in Ohi-style ceramics, a school of handformed pottery created on a wheel, rapidly fired and removed from the kiln while still red hot.
