Rilo Kiley were never a band with a real long-term strategy. They formed in 1998 when singer Jenny Lewis and guitarist Blake Sennett, who were dating at the time, realized they had a strong musical chemistry. With help from bassist Pierre de Reeder and drummer Jason Boesel, they released some of the best indie-rock albums of the 2000s, earned a fiercely devoted cult audience, and were seemingly on the verge of a commercial breakthrough before they imploded in 2008. For several years, any sort of reunion seemed exceedingly unlikely.
