Winning a track and field conference championship is one thing, but winning a state championship is another. And it’s not going to be easy. Just ask Summit sophomore Ruth Gobershock, coming off a conference title while breaking a school record in the girls 100-meter hurdles last Friday at the IMC championships. She knows that there is now a major step up in competition at the Class 5A state championships. “Going into state is going to be a really big challenge,” Gobershock said. “I have really strong competitors that I raced against last year. I’m really excited to go against them this year.” On Friday and Saturday, IMC athletes will compete at Hayward Field in Eugene against the best the state has to offer. Heading into state, 14 of the 34 fastest times, farthest throws and highest and longest jumps in 5A this season belong to IMC athletes. The six teams champions over the past three seasons have all been from the IMC as well — Summit boys and girls in 2023 and 2024, and the Caldera boys and girls in 2025.…
