Key facts Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but serious disease The virus is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes Approximately 30 per cent of those who develop severe cases will die There is no vaccine or specific medicine The best way to avoid the disease is to not get bitten by mosquitoes. Overview EEE – also known as triple E – is a virus that affects the brain and nervous system. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. However, it is rare, with an average of just 11 cases reported every year. The virus primarily resides in birds and rodents, mainly on the Atlantic and Gulf coast of the United States. But it has also been found in Central and Latin America, Canada, and the Caribbean. Signs and symptoms Symptoms of EEE can include Fever Headaches Vomiting and diarrhoea Seizures Behavioural changes Drowsiness The infection can progress to encephalitis, which is an inflammation of the brain.…
