Ben bilmem , the Turkish expression for “I do not know,” is one such phrase. In ordinary conversation, it may be heard as uncertainty or lack of information. Within the Islamic contemplative tradition, however, it can become a discipline of the soul. It asks the speaker to pause before the self rushes forward. It gives the heart a moment to resist the desire to appear informed, certain, or superior.
