It managed to totally surprise everyone, and yet at the same moment, surprise no one at all. It really was startling when it was announced that Tim Cook is stepping down as Apple CEO, but it wasn't remotely unexpected that his successor would be John Ternus. Apple may have dropped the news on us at the most unexpected of times, but it has been paving the way for at least months, if not years. This could be an exceptionally smooth handover.
