While much consideration is given to the form and material of sculpture, one of the most fundamental—and arguably crucial—aspects of the medium is often overlooked: its relational placement. This critical consideration is at the heart of José Dávila’ s solo show at Sean Kelly , New York, aptly and concisely titled “ The Simple Act of Positioning .” Reflecting an ongoing preoccupation in his practice with positioning and arranging elements, in his fifth solo show with the gallery, the sculptures themselves and their presentation in relationship to one another reveals new connotations and tensions.
