Dear Care and Feeding, I have a 6.5-year-old first grader, and I’ve started noticing more instances where she isn’t being honest—usually about small, everyday things. For example, she’ll say she didn’t wet the bed when it’s obvious she did, or I’ll ask, “What do you have?” and she’ll say, “Nothing,” while I can clearly see a snack bar in her hand. What’s tricky is that my 4.5-year-old is now starting to do similar things—like insisting she “spilled water” when it’s clear she actually peed her pants. So I’m worried not only about addressing it with my older child, but also about it becoming a pattern for both of them. I don’t think either of them is being intentionally deceptive; it feels more like avoiding getting in trouble, embarrassment, or wishful thinking.…
