Can someone help me understand how I can start camping in SoCal Originally from Hawaii, we used to just 4WD down sketchy secluded trails until we reached the ocean and camped wherever. Now I’m in LA, and it’s been a nightmare trying to figure out how to camp. Every recommended campsite charges $40-100/night and seems like a children’s playground with the amount of people and amenities. Ideally I’d like to just find a spot off the beaten path and setup shop there. But now people are saying there’s permits, rules and regulations, fire restrictions, temperature considerations, BLM, yellow spots, overbooked or reserved areas I need to consider??? Here’s what I want. Friday night, I’m bored, I pack a tent into my AWD sedan, drive to the Forrest (any Forrest), find a good spot and set up a tent and fire - stay there for 2-3 days without issue. Why is that so difficult here? What do I really need to understand to have a successful camping trip?…
