LETTERS: Aldi’s expansion plan; questions for legislators

Details about Aldi I am writing to share my perspective and concerns regarding Aldi’s plans to expand its stores to include Colorado as of 2026. Having been a patron of multiple Aldis on the East Coast, I can appreciate their low prices and their European-designed product setup, yet Aldi has not followed through on their repeatedly stated commitment to phasing out gestation crates in their pork production; in contrast to multiple grocery retailers and some prominent fast-food corporations that have carried out this promise, such as McDonald’s. Gestation crates are a controversial issue given the severity of confinement, not allowing for turning around or extension of limbs, estimated to be 64.77% – up to 70% of their lifespan. For consumers who are not uncomfortable by this, given the recent past pandemic, some may be worried about potential recurring zoonotic diseases, given the intense stocking density of these animals over extended periods of time.…
