In certain corners of the internet, the abstract DIY freakout A City Drowned In God's Black Tears is regarded as one of last year's best rap albums. It comes from a Baltimore-based duo, rapper Brian Ennals and producer Infinity Knives, who have been working under the radar for years, and it represents a big step up for those two. Now, Ennals has gone to work with another producer, the New York underground veteran Blockhead, for a new album. Early results of that combination are extremely promising. Blockhead came up as a regular Aesop Rock collaborator, and the two of them still work together a lot. For something like a quarter-century, Blockhead has stayed active on the New York underground, making great beats for entire generations of arty rappers.
