‘Very happy to see voting percentage’: Supreme Court praises record turnout in Bengal polls

The Supreme Court Friday lauded the high voter turnout in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections held Thursday, noting that the polling was largely peaceful and relatively free of violence. The bench, also comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, made the remarks while hearing the pleas challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bengal. “Individually, as a citizen of India, I am very happy to see the percentage of voting…This country, people need to participate in the (democratic process),” Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who was presiding over the bench, said. Justice Bagchi added, “Another thing is there is no violence, or at least…that’s more concern for us”. West Bengal recorded its highest-ever turnout in the first phase of the 2026 Assembly elections Thursday, with 92.88 per cent voting in 152 of the 294 seats, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).…
