It was a much better second round for Rory McIlroy compared to his first Credit : Frank Franklin II/AP Rory McIlroy fought his way back to become a contender at the 108th US PGA Championship, but backed Scottie Scheffler’s criticism of the “absurd” course. “It’s a bunched leaderboard but that means it’s a sign of not a great setup,” McIlroy said. On a torrid day at Aronimink Golf Club, world No 1 Scheffler labelled the pin positions “a bit absurd”, but McIlroy managed to steer himself through the carnage to put himself back into contention for a second successive major. The 37-year-old Northern Irishman, who last month won his sixth major at the Masters , survived the severe conditions at the club – with the wind gusting to 30mph and the punishing greens taking their toll – to post a bogey-free 67.
