‘Stars buy their own tickets worth Rs 18 cr on opening weekend’: ‘Block booking’ hits Tamil film industry

In recent times, the film business has become highly unpredictable with very few films actually connecting with the audience. Many films that post massive box office numbers are often accused of inflating collections through block bookings. What was once seen largely as a practice within the Hindi film industry, is also commonplace in the Tamil film industry . Stars are allegedly purchasing tickets worth crores to project the image of a Rs 100-crore blockbuster, while theatre owners are said to be pressuring small producers to buy a fixed number of tickets in exchange for securing even a single show in their theatres. ‘Big stars buy tickets worth Rs 18 crore’ Producer Dhananjayan, who has recently been vocal about the challenges faced by producers in the Tamil film industry, has now spoken about how box office figures are often far from organic.
