Mexico wants the USMCA extended now. On Tuesday its economy minister made the position clear. The move comes as North American trade officials gear up for a mandated joint review next month that could lock in the pact’s future or plunge it into years of uncertainty. Mexico’s Early Move Sets Tone for High-Stakes Talks Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s economy minister, stated the government’s intention plainly. “Mexico’s intention and position is that the treaty should be extended,” he said. “Keep in mind that the treaty will remain in effect for many more years, but we would like it to be extended to 16 years.” ( Investing.com ) His comments land at a delicate moment. The USMCA took effect July 1, 2020. Built into it sits a novel six-year review clause. Come July 1, 2026, the three partners must assess the agreement’s performance. They can then confirm in writing, through their heads of government, whether they wish to extend it for another 16 years. All three must agree for automatic renewal to kick in.…
