On the fifth day of training camp this offseason, Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon wore a hoodie that put her players on the spot. The jacket, which read “THE STANDARD,” across Hammon’s chest, wasn’t much different than any of the other customized sweatshirts she had worn throughout her tenure with the Aces. Starting in the 2024 season, which saw the Aces’ three-peat attempt end in the semifinals against the Liberty, Hammon and the Aces could frequently be seen in hoodies that said “GRACE.” “The standard actually has not much to do with basketball and numbers. It has to do with how we approach this Aces team. It’s an acronym,” Hammon said, gesturing toward newcomer Stephanie Talbot before she asked her to share what the “S” stood for. It’s self-sacrifice, which Hammon eventually volunteered as Talbot struggled to think of the answer while putting up post-practice shots.
