100 YEARS AGO For the week ending June 6, 1926 Monster Blast Set Off Today At Lava Butte Six tons, and some besides, of powder were discharged in one great blast this morning just to the southeast of Lava butte. In preparation for the surfacing operations between the butte and Bend. The blast, which loosened up an extensive face of rock, was one of the largest ever discharged in Central Oregon. Gus Nyberg, who has the contract for the surfacing of The Dalles California highway between Lava butte and Bend, is now setting up his crushing plant, which will utilize the thousands of tons, of rock shattered by the blast this morning. The crushing plant will be one of the largest in the northwest, for highway work. One 90 horse power engine has already been set up and another engine, of 100 horse power, is being shipped to Bend. The six tons of powder which tore up the face of basalt exposed in the fault line southeast of Lava Butte were discharged far in the interior of the mass of rick.…
