Unfortunately for Mexicans, Mexico has moved to the top of the US foreign policy agenda. After Trump kidnapped the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro , he threatened Mexico with ground operations against ‘cartels’ that the DOJ designated terrorist organisations. Without telling the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in September 2024 the US captured Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada García , the head of one of the clans that runs the Sinaloa organisation. It wouldn’t have been possible to seize him without the help of his godson, Joaquín Guzmán López, one of the sons of another Sinaloa boss, ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, who’s been in a US federal prison since 2019. The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, was also suspected of complicity in the operation, which coincided with the murder of Héctor Cuén, a former rector of the Universidad de Sinaloa and a political rival of Rocha Moya’s. Factional feuds following El Mayo’s rendition resulted in 1200 dead and 1400 disappeared in Sinaloa.…
