Yet there’s a paradox: advocating love for animals as a way to justify owning them… isn’t that somewhat contradictory? It was while keeping a cat in an apartment that I began to question whether having pets is selfish. This cat wasn’t allowed to go outside. Yes, the apartment was filled with toys and all kinds of more original accessories than the last, countless varieties of cat treats, a treat dispenser, and an automatic water fountain. But did the cat really care about any of that? You know the answer. By smothering it, by spoiling it so much (no doubt with its well-being in mind), the well-meaning owner was missing what truly mattered. Her cat had only one dream: to be free.
