After Josef Newgarden spun on a Lap 125 restart, bringing out a yellow, two alternate pit strategies emerged as half the field including the leaders, Palou and Malukas, stayed out, while the other half, including Rosenqvist and Palou, pit under yellow. While they gave up top track position, they gambled on saving enough fuel to make it to the end with one less pit stop under green than the leaders. When Malukas and Palou eventually pit from the lead on Laps 147 and 148, they lost some time to Rosenqvist and O'Ward as they had to pass lap traffic. On the final pit stop, O'Ward pit two laps before Rosenqvist, allowing him to emerge ahead with the undercut. After Malukas and Palou make their final pit stop, they chased down the leading O'Ward as he saved fuel, cutting into the lead by 12 seconds over 9 laps.
