A s a child, to the puzzlement of those around me, I developed an interest in tarot cards. When at first they gave me horse-themed playing cards, I considered it an insult. As soon as I was old enough, I took the S-train and bought myself a beginner’s set from The Bookshop of the Unknown. It was a simple yellow box containing a deck of playing cards and a blue book about how to read them. In time, I became familiar with every card. One in particular fascinated me. The High Priestess. It showed a woman seated between two pillars, in her lap she held a scroll. Her bright blue headscarf, cape and dress ran together as one. A slender yellow crescent moon rested at her feet. On her head was a crown, behind her a drape patterned with pomegranates. There was something mesmerising about the drape, it drew you in, and beyond it lay the suggestion of a horizon or the sea, a wonderful darkness. I mention it now, because this figure visited me when I was about to give birth to my second child.…
