Melbourne-based Dylan Young is the mind behind Way Dynamic, the latest signee to vaunted American indie label Jagjaguwar. Last fall, Way Dynamic released Massive Shoe , an album that broke through to streaming success in our nightmare landscape on the strength of easygoing '60s and '70s-inspired songcraft. The label will give Massive Shoe its first proper international release this year, and Young is heading overseas this autumn I hear whiffs of fellow chilled-out retro merchants like Drugdealer, Pure X, and Mac DeMarco in Young's work, and the guitar work flashes me back to Jim O'Rourke's pop-rock excursions. But the real reference points go back further, all the way to the source. "In Review" drifts breezily into the space between Brian Wilson and Neil Young, while "Mercy Town" is pure Kinks worship (complimentary) and focus track "Miffed It" is Nick Drake with a beat-up ballcap. Though Massive Shoe isn't dropping over here until October, the whole album is right there on Bandcamp for your enjoyment.…
