Somewhere in the future, there's a finish line in the marathon to understand supermassive black holes (SMBH). We can't say how close we are, or what the final results will be. But astrophysicists keep going, confident that with each passing landmark, the finish draws nearer. The effort to understand them became more earnest when the JWST was launched. Astrophysicists were suprised to find many SMBH in the early Universe. According to the understanding at the time, there shouldn't have been enough time for them to become so massive so soon. New research is adding to the difficulty in understanding SMBH, turning it from a race into an obstacle course. Working with the JWST, researchers have found a SMBH with 50 million solar masses that appears to predate its host galaxy. This discovery is a direct challenge to what we thought we know about SMBH.…
