The embattled chief executive officer of the UK’s South East Water resigned after a campaign by lawmakers and customers in the wake of multiple outages across Kent that affected tens of thousands of people.

David Hinton felt his position had become an “increasing distraction,” the company said in an emailed statement Friday. He will remain in post while the board works on finding a replacement.
