Published 1:34 pm Thursday, April 23, 2026 Two hikers from Philomath were rescued off South Sister on Wednesday evening after one of them became hypothermic. The hikers parked at Dutchman Flat at the base of Mt. Bachelor and were on the way back down the mountain when they called for help. Deschutes County Search & Rescue Medical and Mountain Rescue teams reached the hikers around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. One hiker was able to walk out without assistance, while the second was transported in a rescue sled after being warmed up by search and rescue medical personnel. The rescue team reached Cascade Lakes Highway with the hikers around 3:45 a.m. Thursday morning. They navigated deep snow on the way down. One hiker was transported to a Bend Fire & Rescue ambulance to be checked further and the other man was brought to his car. Despite the start of spring, conditions in high elevations can change rapidly. Hikers are advised to carry food, water and clothing.…
