Texas just handed the autonomous vehicle world its clearest snapshot yet. New state records show Alphabet’s Waymo operating 577 self-driving vehicles. Tesla lists 42. The gap stands at more than 13 to one. The numbers surfaced this week under a fresh Texas law that took effect May 28. Operators must now self-certify their systems meet Level 4 standards and disclose fleet sizes to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The data offers the first official accounting of commercial robotaxi scale in the state. And it reveals a stark difference in execution. Waymo runs fully driverless rides across Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Its vehicles pick up passengers through the Uber app in Austin and its own app elsewhere. Operations run 24 hours in many zones. Riders report average waits of three to six minutes during normal hours. Peak times stretch to 10 or 15 minutes at most. Tesla launched its unsupervised robotaxi service in Austin in June 2025. Expansion to Dallas and Houston followed in April 2026.…
