The Allahabad High Court recently granted divorce to a woman CRPF officer, observing that even a single imputation of unchastity by a spouse constitutes cruelty. A bench of Justices Atul Sreedharan and Vivek Saran allowed the wife’s appeal and set aside a 2008 family court order that had dismissed her divorce plea. “An imputation of unchastity has been levelled against the appellant herein and that letter having allegedly been written by the husband who is the respondent herein, the same would constitute cruelty enabling the appellant-wife to be a recipient for decree of divorce,” the court said in its order dated April 23. Allegations about wife’s character The appellant-wife, who joined the CRPF after marriage, had sought divorce on grounds of cruelty. She alleged dowry-related harassment, physical assault, and that her husband used to take away her earnings.…
