Three generations keep wheels turning at family business

Horrell Engineering has sat at the intersection of Victoria and Wills streets in central Ashburton for 75 years. It is now run by the family’s third generation. Blair Horrell, the current owner and director, is the son of the late Kerry Horrell, and grandson of founder, the late Cliff Horrell. Blair, and wife Mel’s daughter, Quinn is the next generation to be working in the family business. He thinks Cliff would be proud to see the business still operating and still family owned. ‘‘To be able to continue what both granddad and dad started is pretty special,” Horrell said. ‘‘Granddad worked hard to build a solid, practical engineering business, and a lot of what we do today still reflects that approach. “The workshop, many of the machines, and the type of work we do would all be very familiar to him,’’ Horrell said. The business started in 1950 when Cliff purchased a 1937 International Truck for use as a mobile workshop.…
