More than 2,300 individuals were disciplined over the past year, with 289 suspended and 118 dismissed, Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald has said South African Minister of Correctional Services Pieter Groenewald has said that 2,388 correctional officials were subjected to disciplinary action during the 2025/26 financial year, including cases involving corruption and the smuggling of contraband such as cellphones and drugs. This comes after EFF Member of Parliament (MP) Nontando Nolutshungu asked Groenewald to provide details on the progress of the department’s gang management strategy since a Portfolio Committee briefing on 4 March 2026, the funding allocated to the strategy, and measurable outcomes achieved. She also sought information on disciplinary action against officials and plans to address perimeter security vulnerabilities at correctional facilities.
