Four-story Castle Rock mural commemorates Colorado, U.S. anniversaries

As Colorado celebrates the 150 th anniversary of its statehood, and the U.S. celebrates its 250 th birthday, the Douglas County Housing Partnership has announced the creation of a mural that commemorates both historic milestones. Painted by Colorado Springs-based muralist Michael Beenenga, the large-scale artwork takes up four stories of 403 Perry St., in the city’s downtown area. Beenenga, who has been creating murals since his high school days, said the Castle Rock project is the largest piece of art he’s ever worked on. “It’s an awesome canvas to pain on,” he said. “The bigger, the better.” The project was made possible, in part, through a $15,000 grant from the town of Castle Rock, according to Douglas County Housing Partnership Executive Director Maria Ciano. “We wanted a mural that reflected the pride our residents have in Castle Rock’s heritage, and in Colorado’s heritage,” Ciano said.…
