The Southern Poverty Law Center is the paradigmatic example of a victim of its own success ( “Ku Klux ‘scam’ by SPLC,” April 23). Through relentless civil litigation in the late 20th century, it essentially destroyed the Ku Klux Klan as it was at the time, winning trial after trial with monetary jury awards. However, in doing so, it also destroyed the SPLC’s reason for being. Without that particular monster, it had no one left to fight and no evil opponent to point to in its fundraising efforts. If the hate groups die, so does the SPLC.
