I work in a niche industry where the salaries are not public, how do I know what I deserve? Hello everyone. As the title states I work in a pretty unique and niche industry, thoroughbred horse breeding farms. It’s a fairly big industry if you live in central KY but mostly non-existent elsewhere. We work to produce racehorses that go on to hopefully be successful with the ultimate goal of being in the biggest races in the sport. (Kentucky derby, breeders cup, etc.) I’m 31, have only worked with horses for about 8 years, no proper schooling or degrees. I’ve worked my way up to now being a manager on a horse farm. In these farms, typically you have 3 managers. Farm manager leads the farm with 2 division managers under him, Yearling Manager & Broodmare manager. What I’ve come to realize is that this industry is very private with the salaries of these managers. Even in job advertisements for these positions, the salaries are never listed, it’s always “based on experience”. There’s never even a range.…
