YOKOHAMA – Police arrested a 16-year-old boy Tuesday for allegedly spraying a liquid that caused a strange odor on a train in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The suspect, who lives in Tokyo's Ota Ward, has admitted to the allegation that he impeded train operations, according to investigators.
The Kanagawa Prefectural Police believe that the suspect sprayed the liquid, of unknown composition, on the train while it was running between Yokohama and Kawasaki stations on the Tokaido Line at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, causing some passengers to suffer sore throats.
The incident delayed operations by East Japan Railway by over two hours.
Three people were taken to the hospital, but all suffered only minor symptoms, with the incident affecting some 1,200 passengers.
Security camera footage led to the boy's arrest. The prefectural police searched his house on Tuesday, but found no spray cans.
