Congress TVK alliance Tamil Nadu: On Wednesday, the Congress broke its longstanding alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in order to form the government in Tamil Nadu with the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). In the 2026 Assembly election, the TVK emerged as the single largest party in the state with 108 seats out of the total 234. “This alliance — founded on mutual respect, appropriate share, and shared responsibility between the two parties — is not only for the formation of this government, but also for future elections to the local body organisations, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha ,” Congress leader in charge of Tamil Nadu , Girish Chodankar, said in a press statement. With DMK spokespersons accusing the Congress of being “backstabbers”, this move by the latter brings to an end what had otherwise been a mostly steadfast alliance for the past two decades or so.
