How to reattach drawer pull on antique dresser

I have an antique dresser and one of the drawer pulls has fallen off. Looks like it was originally just screwed on - no evidence of glue - but someone tried to fix it with nails. The threads in the screw hole are stripped. Should I just glue in some wooden matchsticks or toothpicks and reattach it with with a screw? or is there a better technique?

I apologize if this is a "low effort" post - the effort may be low but choosing the right technique requires some expertise. This is a piece with old components that would be very hard to reproduce if I mess it up.
