How do you deal with therapists who don’t understand your reality, or maybe they have a bit of privilege?

I often have therapists, especially in intensive mental health programs, not speak to me from a place of reality. Like they’re so far removed from the way the rest of the world lives that they just wind up invalidating people. In programs I’ve been in, other clients have called out these mindsets in group settings and the therapists almost act victimized instead of taking accountability to learn and grow. A few examples: My dad couldn’t visit me in residential treatment in another state for family week because he had to work and had used up his PTO before learning I’d be going there. The family therapist told me “your father values money and his job over your mental health. He’s choosing work over you. He’s telling you who he is right now.” My other parent is abusive and did show up, and received praise for making the effort (until she arrived and they met her), so I didn’t appreciate this one bit.…
