They began as equals. Two great lights sharing the heavens together. There is a story commonly told, that the moon once questioned this arrangement and asked God, “Can two rulers wear one crown?” God replied that the moon was right and told it to make itself smaller. The moon then protested. Why should it be diminished for speaking truth? Why should honesty lead to reduction? To comfort the moon, God gave it the stars. Whether taken literally, symbolically, or somewhere in between, it is one of the most fascinating stories in Jewish thought because it says something deeply human about power, visibility, and closeness. The sun became the greater force, massive, blazing and dominant. It lights the entire world and sustains life itself.…
