I keep hearing to have a wool base layer, like smartwool, and I did buy a couple pairs, but I'm not sure what I should wear as the layer over that. My REI hiking pants are great but rather thin -- I was chilly recently wearing them alone on a 60 degree day (tho I didn't have the smartwool underneath then, obviously). Is smartwool layer + thin hiking pants or rain pants enough? Or can anyone recommend a good, non-cotton pair of pants?
