I am Puerto Rican and Spanish was spoken around me my entire life. As a result, I have a very… VERY thick Puerto Rican accent when I speak and I find it hard to imitate any accent outside of that. I’m learning more Spanish because I want to be fluent, not just conversational. I realized that I speak with a very distinctive Erre Arrastrá when saying words like “perro” “carro” or even “erre Arrastrá” 😂. I read somewhere that this is actually highly stigmatized in the Hispanic community. How so? Is it the type of thing in which I will face discrimination for by other Hispanic dialects if I use it, do I sound “uneducated”, what is the general consensus about the Erre Arrastrá? PS: for those of you who do not know, the Erre Arrastrá is a dialectical construct in which the back of the tongue raises to the back of the throat, causing friction. It can be akin to the way the letter “R” sound is pronounced in French.…
