Before the Subway drawings, the Club 57 scene, and the high-profile collaborations, Keith Haring dreamed of New York. He did so from his hometown of Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and oftentimes with Kermit Oswald , his best friend since kindergarten. As teenagers, they would hop the three-hour bus to the city and spend afternoons wandering its museums and galleries. They stayed close following Haring’s move to study at the School of Visual Arts in 1978, exchanging letters, gifts, and visits.
