A look at who they actually serve. It is difficult to ignore the extent to which corporate influence has expanded into almost every domain of modern life. From government policy to personal data, from media to education, large companies are increasingly the structures around which those systems are organised. Universities have not been exempt from this shift, and in some cases, they have exacerbated it. Over time, their function has become increasingly aligned with the labour market outcomes of their graduates, and more specifically, with their ability to place students into high-paying, high-status corporate roles. This is not accidental. University rankings, such as those produced by QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education, incorporate graduate employability and employer reputation as key metrics.
