From start to agonised finish, Keir Starmer has gestured towards something only to turn his back on it at the first hint of opposition. Covering American politics, I have heard the mocking laughter after each U-turn in Washington DC. It rings out across the Atlantic and announces that an empty suit still occupies the highest office in the land. This number of U-turns (one count has the Prime Minister on 13 ) reveals a leader as limp as a sail without any wind. And more importantly, it shows that Starmer was never honest about his beliefs – for surely if he passionately believed that a certain policy was core to the national renewal he promised, then he would have followed through. Starmer’s reticence is apparently infectious – even his challenger, Wes Streeting, is still mum about his political ambitions, even as Andy Burnham begins his march on the south.…
