For the first half of the 2026 Boston Marathon , defending champion and course record holder Sharon Lokedi of Kenya was tucked into a pack of 17 women, hardly visible. That changed by 18 miles, when the pack was down to nine, and Lokedi was front and center, controlling the race. The other eight athletes waited for her to make her move. Two Americans—Jess McClain and Annie Frisbie—were among the top 10. Although the conditions were perfect for a fast time—45 degrees with a slight tailwind—the pack had run steadily at a projected finish pace of low 2:22s for the whole race. Just past the 21-mile mark, Lokedi pounced. Suddenly the pack was strung out. Only Lokedi’s countrywomen, Loice Chemnung, who ran 1:03:57 to win the Barcelona Half Marathon in February, and Irine Cheptai, third at last year’s Chicago in her PR of 2:17:51, could keep pace.
