HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE is definitely another candidate-- alongside EATING RAOUL, TIME BANDITS, SWEET SWEETBACK'S BAADASSSS SONG, and WATERSHIP DOWN as one of the worst films in the Criterion Collection. Just depressingly unfunny. The film noir parody with Jerry Curl, in particular, just drills the same stupid joke into the ground over and over again. Townsend undermines his point not just with his painful homophobia and thoughtlessly underwritten female characters, but by just not being very talented. Maybe he doesn't get better roles because he sucks. I don't know what else to say about it. It conforms to all your ideas of what a bad film is and if you like this I have no idea what you could possibly dislike. HOUSE OF GAMES is more interesting to talk about. It comes with a lot of hype being a favorite film of Roger Ebert, Edgar Wright, and Stanley Kubrick and everybody who talks about it is careful not to spoil it.…
