On paper there appears to be a standout in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. But if the previous 151 editions have taught horseplayers anything it’s to expect the unexpected when the gates open for the Run for the Roses. Further Ado, trained by Brad Cox and to be ridden by John Velazquez, is the obvious paper pick after running a 106 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland on April 4 by 11 lengths. That’s five points higher on the Beyer scale than the next highest figure earned by Florida Derby (G1) winner Commandment and six more than the 100 rating shared by Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner So Happy, Florida Derby runner-up The Puma and Chief Wallabee, second in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) and third in the Florida Derby. In route races, 2 Beyer points equate to approximately one length, so that suggests that Further Ado has run 2 ½ lengths faster than his nearest competitor in the 1 1/4 -mile race for 3-year-olds.…
