A Dunedin woman who believed she was in a relationship with a retired four-star United States general was duped out of up to $800,000 over five years by a scammer. Police are now warning the public to be careful when sending money and to watch out for AI-generated photos. The 69-year-old woman presented to the front counter at the Dunedin Central Police Station on Saturday seeking advice, Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said. She had received a document "about a court release for an American general". The general in question was James F. Amos, a retired United States Marine Corps four-star general who commanded the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in combat during the Iraq War. She believed they were in a relationship, Sgt Lee said. Police spoke to her about the legitimacy of the document and it was revealed the woman had been purchasing vouchers and sending them to the supposed general, as well as Bitcoin and bank transfers.…
