First time in Asia, first time attending an international trade show, first time seeing a 10-foot-tall planer… but I’m getting ahead of myself a bit. The reason I was overseas was for Wood Taiwan 2026, a semi-regular expo showcasing woodworking machinery and manufacturing technology. The show, which was held April 23–26 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, featured numerous exhibitors and entire zones dedicated to machinery, smart manufacturing, and industrial-scale production. The primary audience for these tools are people using wood on a scale that dwarfs what we tend to do in our garages. Think timber frame commercial buildings, not spoon carving. But there’s a common thread that exists between these two groups, one that I witnessed over and over again, which is the love for wood as a material.…
