I have a pregnant onion that I got years ago that has struggled ever since. I actually had two, but one died after an unfortunate fall. Its only maybe an inch and a half diameter and recently also took a tumble that knocked several of the tiny babies off and left it with no leaves and a gash on the side. I would love to propgate these babies in case the mother doesnt survive (though she seems to be doing fine), but every single time I have tried they've never rooted. They just stay stagnant for months and eventually shrivel up. I do what everyone says to do and put them 1/3 deep, root side down, in succulent soil and water when I water the mother plant. What am I supposed to do? Should I be putting them in a wetter setup like people do with alocasia corms until it gets roots? Should I put it on moss? Leave it out of soil entirely? Brighter light? I'm at a loss. In all the years Ive had it not one baby onion has survived and the mother barely grows. What am I doing wrong?
